How to Budget for Different Seasons

With different weather comes different expenses. We unpack how you can prepare your budget to last across the various seasons.

Expect to spend more on heating/electricity in winter

When in winter, you will naturally find your heating or electricity costs increase as your desire to stay warm becomes that much stronger. This can naturally involve heating areas in your home, but can also extend to boiling a kettle or cooking more often.

In winter months, expect your electricity costs to increase – budgeting nearly twice as much could effectively enable you to manage your expenses. To accurately understand how much more you might be spending, be sure to tally your electricity expenses throughout different months.

Budget for increased water consumption in summer

In the height of summer, leisure activities such as swimming in a pool, work such as gardening, or simply drinking more water may result in your home using more water.

Budgeting for this eventuality – and considering waterwise alternatives to leisure and home-related activities – can help you manage this expense.

Expect additional entertainment costs in summer

Summertime is a great occasion to host guests and entertain, though this can involve hosting expenses. Setting up an entertainment budget can help you explore what you could afford to do – and remember, you can always ask your guests to supply their own food or drink to help manage your own expenses.

Prepare for garden/upkeep expenses in the change of seasons

If your home has a garden, you might find that the amount of work you need to maintain it increases as the seasons change. For example, this might amount to watering in summer, or cultivating new growth in spring.

Be sure to monitor your expenses, and consider your gardening plans ahead of schedule to save what funds you need to manage your garden area.
